I can’t speak for everyone, but where I am (Regina, Saskatchewan) as of now we’re a full month into the iPhone 4 launch in Canada and I still cannot buy one.

It’s hard to believe. Apple had a month since the US launch to prepare. Locations in our city received only a few phones which were sold out before the day was out. Since then, every week or so locations received anywhere from zero to two more phones which obviously sold as soon as they arrived.

A month after a questionably feeble launch and they’re still completely unavailable? I don’t know what other conclusion can be reached. Apple obviously doesn’t care if they have any customers in Canada, or at least my end of it. Weird.

I find it difficult to reward that kind of open contempt for my business. I was on the fence before but this is making my decision easier. Looks like it’s time to switch.

A while back I wanted to find myself an iPhone app where I could reasonably quickly figure out what my depth of field was going to be in a certain situation.

I looked at a few and finally decided on an app called f/8. It’s exactly what I was looking for. It’ll keep an inventory of your gear and what you’ve got equipped at the moment so you can swap stuff in and out, little slider bars to adjust settings and an easy display of what you’re looking at focus-wise. I’ll let the screenshots and description on the site and/or app store do a better job of explaining that but I just wanted to say after testing it out that it’s an awesome tool to have with me and quick and convenient enough to be worth using.

If you’re in need of the same thing, you can check it out at the app store or at the developer’s site.

Developer’s website: http://www.bitwerkz.ch/f8.html

App store link: http://itunes.apple.com/app/f-8-dof-calculator/id290526128?mt=8

Had this problem today. Got a text message but there was no audible alert even though my phone wasn’t muted.

When I played with the volume the overlay said “ringer (headphones)”. It thought I had headphones plugged in. Uh oh.

After some Googling, I found there are a couple possible remedies to this that can work. I’ll start with the one that worked for me…

It’s possible for dust, lint, etc. to get in the headphones port and make the phone think headphones are plugged in.

I took a can of compressed air with the skinny straw attachment, stuck it in the port and blew it out with air for a few seconds. Poof! Problem solved. Phew!

The other methods that people have reported working:

1. Plugging and unplugging headphones until it starts working (maybe just another method of clearing debris?)

2. Start up a song in iPod with the headphones plugged in, then shut down iPod and return to desktop with the headphones plugged in, then unplug the headphones.
